In life we all run away from different things, these could be stress, fear, pain, growth, responsabilities, and more. The concept for this editorial resulted from a look into the journey of my my life, and is depicted by displaying the complete opposite, running away. In the real world of Herman V.Brandt, I tend to put the car on drive, push the pedal to the metal and face adversity, challenges, fear, failure, growth, and pain. This does not mean I do not run into these things, I just choose to take my chances at facing them rather than giving into them. Remember, though the shots do not always go in the basket when you shoot, they NEVER go in when you do not shoot, so shoot the ball!

The man behind the camera...

Biography

On November 7th 1982, Herman Van den Brandt was born in Kinshasa, Zaire, the current Democratic Republic of Congo. Son of a Congolese mother, Emilie; and a Belgian father Joannes, Herman received a rich cultural background. At the age of 6, Herman and family escaped Africa for the European continent as a civil war was on the rise. Herman's rich cultural experience was about to get much richer as they landed in the Mediterranean town of Benidorm, located in the south of Spain. Here is where he developed a parallel love for both sports and art. Herman started drawing as soon as he was able to hold a pencil, and started creating and hand crafting as soon as he was allowed to use scissors and glue. Through his youth, Herman experienced with a variety of art mediums including screen printing, graphic design and custom sneakers (co-founder/creator and exclusive artist for pimpmykicks.com). Due to a split household, Herman moved to Belgium in the early 2000s where he continued to excel in sports, mainly soccer and basketball, the latter one earned him a college scholarship. Basketball was an opportunity to afford education abroad, as well as ticket to an athletic college career and the American dream. The ticket took Herman on a journey through the midwest, landing him in the middle of nowhere. Herman graduated with a BA in Business Marketing and Graphic Design. Through his graphic design program is how he was introduced to photography. But it wasn't until the fall of 2009 that Herman purchased his first DSLR camera, a Sony Alfa 200, with the sole purpose of producing professional quality images for his custom sneakers. To his surprise, the fact that the camera was bigger and with more buttons, the photos produced did not have a higher quality. So he had to learn to utilize it, and he did so on youtube, yes YOUTUBE, and of course trial and error, this process was the beginning for what today is his passion. Now, 2 years later, photography has completely sucked Herman in, leaving him constantly thirsty for more creative problem solving through the lens.

I currently reside in Wilmington, De, and I am a trilingual, cultured, creative and passionate photographer, that provides fresh creative solutions for a variety of photography needs such as wedding photography, maternity/pregnancy photography, lifestyle photography, nightlife photography, event photography, fashion photography, corporate photography, and recently even videography to some degree, so pretty much anything that is thrown at me. My passion for photography comes not only from the need to solve problems, but also understanding light, how it molds and shapes images, as well as capturing moments and within them capturing emotions. If the choice or opportunity was given to me, I would love to be able to travel the world and photograph culture as a whole; from food, to lifestyle, spirituality, taboos and social issues. In my heart, I believe that the world is a better place when each individual is a better person, and the best way to accomplish that is to truly understand each other by taking the time to learn about one another, using our differences as inspiration to be closer each other rather than a reason remain further from one another. This is why I dream to learn other cultures and share the collected knowledge.

Goeliv is a model based out of Barcelona, Spain. She is a gorgeous young lady that works a lot and travels the world. At this point in her carrer she has worked in Paris, Milan, London, Madrid and all over Europe. Though she has worked in the US, she did not have a agnecy in the states. This has changed as she is a Wilhelmina model. Being that the European commercial style is different than New York, she was in need of new images for her book. The agency needed a variety of really soft and natural looks, and she personally needed so beauty images. In the hope of getting her photography needs met, Godeliv decided to come down to Herman V.Brandt photogrpahy for a test shoot. It was a great and fun experience as Godeliv is a very active and creative model, definately a great actor and my camera fell in love with! We intend to work together again in the near future, as soon as she is back in NYC and time allows it.

In the fall of 2009 I purchased my first DSLR camera with the simple intent to capture good photographs of my previous passion, custom sneakers. This video displays the culmination of a year of sleepless nights studying, reading and playing with my camera. For this shoot I had a full team for the very first time, Diana Taylor from Lillian Taylor Cosmetics for make up, Courtney B. Willis from Babes Styling Studios for hair and stylist, Chriss and DJ as assistants. The clothes were pieces of the latest collection of Philadelphia designer Michael Thomas, and the beautiful model Melinda Elvenes, current Miss Norway was kind enough to travel from NYC to Wilmington Delaware where my studio is located to rock the camera, and that she did. Finally the flawless 1965 Pontiac Boneville was kindly provided by Ed Massey from Yummy Tummy Foods. Though this day was full of obstacles, it resulted in amazing photographs and a dream come true. This is the first step towards tomorrow...

This is the second portrait photo from collaboration portraits between Lillian Taylor Cosmetics and Herman V.Brandt Photography. These photos are to showcase how Lillian Taylor Cosmetics work in a variety of different types of skin complexions as well as the color range of the different products. It will also display my different lighting techniques. The intent of the beauty portrait was to emphasise the neck of model Jess.

So more and more people ask me how is it like to do what I do with Herman V. Brandt Photography, is it fun? can i come with you? unfortunately very rarely can I take people with me for work, but this is one of the exceptions. My friend Dustin Davis, to whom I thank for this footage and the assistance provided during the event, came along with me to give me a hand while using the experience as an opportunity to network.
